Roman Reigns defeats Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania

Editor’s Note: I attended WrestleMania 39 at SoFi Stadium, and the main event between Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes was electric.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — A dream deferred. Roman Reigns defeated Cody Rhodes Sunday night in the main event of WrestleMania 39, keeping his streak as the WWE Undisputed Universal Champion alive.

Reigns entered SoFi Stadium on Sunday a marked man, holding the WWE Universal Championship for an unprecedented 945 days.

Rhodes, who earned the right to fight Reigns at WrestleMania after winning the 2023 men’s Royal Rumble match in January, had never been in the main event on “The Grandest Stage of Them All” before. Still, the lights weren’t too bright for Rhodes, son of WWE Hall of Famer, the American Dream, Dusty Rhodes.

Reigns fought Rhodes for over 34 minutes in front of 81,000+ WWE fans, but in the end, interference from The Bloodline, featuring Jimmy and Jey Uso and Solo Sikoa and Paul Heyman, proved to be too much for the American Nightmare to overcome.
